Four women in a home discussing an upcoming marriage of one of them. They are laughing,
talking and having a good time. The home belongs to Stella who is already married. But the one
getting married is Cynthia. The other two are Abena and Samantha.
ABENA : So how are the wedding preparations coming along? I heard it is going to be very big.
CYNTHIA: yes oo. It really will be. The way Daniel loves me, if it doesn’t hold about 500
people dier then I don’t know oo. Because the venue we have rented out kraaa is not a joke.
(All four women laugh.)
Just then, Stella’s husband comes in. he smiles and greets them then goes inside the room.
After she sees her husband, Stella’s whole demeanor changes and she begins to fidget.
SAMANTHA: you are so lucky Stella. Look at how polite your husband is. How is married life
treating you?
STELLA: O hmm. By God’s grace is it well. My husband… my husband is a good man. It
could be…
CYNTHIA: ei why are we discussing her marriage? I’m the one getting married oo. Can’t you
see the ring on my finger?
ABENA: She just wants to brag about her five carat diamond ring. We know it’s big.
Others exclaim. Ei 5 carats? Wooooww.
SAM: That is why she keeps moving her finger about.
They laugh.
Just then, Cynthia’s husband comes in the room and goes to the kitchen.
STELLA: I think it is time for you people to go oo. I’m not trying to get rid of you oo. But as
you can see, I have to take care of my husband.
CYNTHIA: you’re throwing out the bride to be? Eii. Me too this is how I will be with my
husband when I get married.
After fake complaining and laughing, they leave the house. Just then Stella’s husband
comes to the room.
DANIEL: what were you people laughing about so loudly when I came back from work?
STELLA: oh nothing. We just talking about Cynthia’s five carat diamond ring.
DANIEL: Five carat? That’s nice. You know what else I like about the number five? I have five
fingers.
Then he lifts up his hand, slaps her and leaves her crying alone in the room after insulting
her.
Instead of you to concentrate on your marriage, you have invited people here and you’re
laughing like you have nothing to do. Foolish woman.
SCENE 2
Stella is crying at home in her chair when she hears a knock on the door. She hears her
friend Sam’s voice and is reluctant to invite her in but eventually does.
SAM: Stella, I have good news for you oo. Face me and let me talk to you. (But Stella stills sits
with her back towards her.) Ah Stella, don’t you want to hear what I have to say? Turn
yourself. (Then she forces Stella to face her.) Jesus! What happened to your face? How did it
swell so much?
STELLA: oh I fell on the floor while I was cleaning yesterday.
SAM: am I supposed to believe that? You fell and one part of your face was bruised like that?
Did Daniel do this to you?
STELLA: hmmmm. I don’t know what to say. Sometimes, when he gets angry, he does things
like this. I don’t know that caused this sudden behavior.
SAM: and you’ve been enduring it quietly all this while? Shouldn’t we report him to the police
for domestic violence? Because this is a crime I hope you know that.
STELLA: ei no. I don’t want my husband to go to prison. I love him. Plus he is a very good
man. I’m sure something has caused this because he wasn’t like this when we got married.
Just then Daniel comes home from work and sees them talking. He comes to join them on
sit and even laughs and jokes with Sam. Then he gets up to go to the room.
SAM: ah Stella, are you sure this is the same man who did this to you? Because he was so
different right now.
STELLA: Sam. That is my current dilemma. When in the company of others, he is the best
husband one could ask for. When we are alone, then he does a 180 on me. Sometimes, I feel like
I’m going mad. I don’t know what to do.
SAM: and you’re sure you don’t want to report him? Stella nods. Then right now, the only thing
I can do is pray for you. I would advise getting a divorce but you will tell me you love him and
you don’t want to report him either so I can only take It to prayer for you. I want you to think
about what you want to do and then let me know. I’m ready to help with whatever you may need.
I’m taking my leave. Call me if anything happens okay?
Then Sam leaves the house while Stella is left thinking on the chair.
SCENE 3
Daniel and 2 his friends come to his house and are talking about what happened at the
restaurant they just came from.
JOHN: ah ma guy. But why did you overpay at the restaurant? You gave them more money
than you were supposed to.
DANIEL: oh. That is not anything to worry about. You know that me dieeer, I’m a rich guy. I
am not broke like you two oo. I have a lot of money if you must know.
KOFI: ahn ei. We are sorry oo. Mr rich guy.
They all laugh about it. Just then, Stella comes I and says she wants to speak to Daniel. He
grumpily gets up and follows her to the side. She asks him for money to buy some groceries
because she doesn’t have enough at the moment. Then we hear Daniel loudly shouting I
don’t have enough money to give you. Leave my sight you foolish women. So she leaves the
room. While still mumbling under his breath, he comes to sit down with his friends.
KOFI: Daniel, were you not the one bragging about how rich you are right now? How much is
the groceries that you don’t want to give Stella money?
DANIEL: I know what I’m doing. Don’t lecture me. She is my wife and I will give her money if
I want to or not. That woman is too foolish for my liking. Everyday, money this money that.
JOHN: Daniel, I remember when you were pursuing this woman. Even when you were flat
broke, if she said she was hungry, you would find food for her to eat. Now you’re married see
how you are treating her. That is so not fair of you. She is your wife for God’s sake. Or did you
have a fight?
DANIEL: it is none of your business whether I fought with her or not. You’re making me very
angry the both of you. If you want to lecture me about how to treat my own wife, then I suggest
you leave my house. If not, let us continue our ball game that was ruined by her presence? Do
you understand?
They both just mumble in agreement and continue watching the football. Then they take
their leave after sometime.
SCENE 4
Stella is busy sweeping and cleaning the room when her husband comes in the house. She
welcomes him but he ignores her. Then he receives a call which makes him very angry. It
about how incompetent his workers are. Stella comes up to him and tries to ask him what is
wrong. He screams at her and says that she is what is wrong. Then he begins to beat her up
and kicks her even while she is on the floor. She becomes unconscious but he doesn’t notice
and just leaves the room.
Sometime later, Sam comes to knock on the door. She doesn’t hear a response and decides
to try the door and to her surprise, it is open. She walks in and sees her friend all bloody
and bruised on the floor. She screams and calls for help. Then someone comes to help her
take Stella of the stage.
SCENE 5
They are in the hospital in a waiting room and Stella is in surgery. Her friend and Kofi are
waiting outside the room. Just then Daniel comes rushing into the hospital.
DANIEL: where’s my wife? Oh Stella. Oh God, she is still not awake? Oh God what have I
done? Stella please wake up.
SAM: stop pretending like you care about her. If you really did, you would not have done this to
her. How can you beat your own wife black and blue? Do you want to kill her? What sort of
human being are you?
Meanwhile Daniel is sobbing and pacing around.
KOFI: I thought you were just fighting with your wife that day when we visited your house. I
didn’t realize you were actually throwing blows. Ei. Daniel. Why would you do this? You come
to church pretending to be a good man of God. A devoted husband and usher who is always
taking care of the church yet this is what you do behind closed doors? How can you call yourself
a Christian when you treat your wife this way? Do you think God is happy about you laying
hands on his precious daughter? She deserves much better than you. You wicked man.
The doctor comes in.
DOCTOR: are you the family of the wife?
Daniel stands up and says, I am her husband.
Luckily for your wife, she is fine and in recovery. However, she seemed to have been pregnant
because she lost a fetus that was growing in her womb.
Daniel begins to wail while the others exclaim.
There appear to be some broken bones and fractures but we would know more when she wakes
up. For now, she is safe. I’ll let you know if anything else comes up. Please excuse me.
The doctor takes his leave.
SCENE 6
Sam and Stella are chatting in a house that belongs to Sam when they hear a knock on the
door. They invite the person in and Daniel comes in.
SAM: what are you doing here? What do you want us to do for you? You have the audacity to
show your face, after all you have done?
DANIEL: I came in peace. I heard my wife is living with you and I came to apologize to her.
Then he goes to kneel in font of Stella.
Stella, please forgive me for what I did to you. I know that I have no excuse for what I put you
through and I just want to say I am very sorry. From the bottom of my heart, please forgive me. I
promise that I won’t do what I did again. Please come back home with me. I’m a changed man. I
will be different from now on.
Meanwhile, Sam is eyeing him from the back and wondering what Stella would say. She
has an anxious look on her face.
STELLA: Daniel, I can forgive you for what you did. After all, I am Christian and it is said in
your apology to make me come back with you. I’ll need to see a change before I would even
consider going back with you. Now please go back. I’m tired and want to rest.
Sam is very happy with Stella’s answer and proceeds to throw out Daniel from the house.
Then she goes back to help Stella to walk offstage saying she needs to rest all the while
praising her for not immediately going back with Daniel.
The End.
Then the two main characters come back and give a spoken word.
THE SPOKEN WORD
Daniel: Sometimes l wonder when the "Husbands love your wives" scripture vanished from
my being.
How come....
( Stella joins him on stage)
Together: l had eyes but couldn't see
I had ears but couldn't hear
Stella: Like the signs of the end time, all the signs of my end were so clear yet l shut up about
it the same way l shut up about the gospel... after all , wasn't it my gospel song, bragging
about a "good husband"?
Daniel: Darling, please don't say that. l am sincerely sorry for everything l did... I am sorry for
being the devil at home and an angel on the outside.
And about outside.... I'm sorry for being outside the circle of true worshippers because l
worshipped in the flesh and in falsehood instead of in spirit and in truth.l was supposed to be
the light of the world, the light of our marriage but I became a spotlight instead.....l was a light
with many spots, dark spots of course. I'm sorry for pretending to be Paul when l hadn't seen
any light yet and hence had Saul still hidden inside.
Stella: Tell me what "sorry" is doing to my wounded heart, soul and body, the same heart, soul
and body l loved you with. l agree l am a Christian and so l must forgive you but why?
Daniel, why must l be the one to forgive and forget when you don't even deserve to be
forgiven but forgotten. l mean, you don't even deserve a seat in my memory.
Daniel: Baby, Matthew 5: 39 says that, if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the
other also.
( Stella is angered)
Stella: So Daniel,after all you did,you have the guts, the effrontery to quote this scripture to
me.
No, what exactly are you insinuating? Am l supposed to after myself a living sacrifice to you
again?
Daniel: Oh no no, not at all, that's not what I'm saying, all I'm saying is please find a place in
your heart to forgive me. Romans 12:19 says "Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it
to the wrath of God..." and Matthew 6:14 also says "if you forgive men their trespasses, your
heavenly Father will also forgive you"
Stella: There he goes again, hiding behind scriptures and the church to have his way. You
know what, I've had enough of the pretense and lies. Was teen wolf just a movie or you saw
me as a childish teen and perfectly acted as the wolf in sheep's clothing?
Anyway, my final decision however is to choose the path of forgiveness but please Daniel,
please stop hiding behind the curtains of "church qualities" and indulging in "churchless
quantities", quantities of pretense and wickedness behind closed doors.
